This is a day-rate profession with a seasonal ceiling: income equals days guided times the local tariff, and weather, snowpack and the guide's own body cap the days. The same carnet that earns CHF 800 a day in Zermatt earns a fraction of that a valley away in France, and the profession's real inequality runs through Nepal, where the workers on the world's most lucrative guided mountain historically earned a few thousand dollars a season.
Almost everyone is self-employed. The Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix — the world's oldest and largest guide company — is a cooperative of independent professionals, not an employer, and the same is true of most guide 'bureaus'. Salaried positions exist mainly in rescue services, national schools, heli-ski operations and the big expedition operators.
薪酬阶梯
US and Canada, apprentice guiding plus ski patrol or instruction work, mid-2020s; aspirancy years are lean everywhere.
France and Austria, first independent seasons at roughly €450–500 per guiding day, mid-2020s; income rises with the client list, not the certificate.
Switzerland, at SBV-recommended day rates of CHF 700–800, 2024 — the highest routine guiding tariffs in the world.
Senior guides leading 8,000 m and Seven Summits trips across a year's seasons, 2020s; a single Everest lead role can pay $25k+ per expedition.
Owners of established guiding and heli-ski businesses in North America and the Alps, 2020s; income shifts from day rates to margins and bookings.
各国薪酬
Switzerland
SBV-recommended day rates, 2024; a fully booked year reaches CHF 80k–100k, the profession's world ceiling for routine work.
United States
Established AMGA/IFMGA guides across Tetons, Cascades and Alaska seasons, 2024; Denali lead guides and heli-ski work top the range.
France
Self-employed guides at Compagnie-scale tariffs around €450–500 per day, mid-2020s; the deepest client market in the Alps.
Canada
ACMG guides combining summer alpine work with the world's largest heli-ski industry in winter, mid-2020s.
New Zealand
NZMGA guides at Aoraki/Mount Cook and in heli-ski operations, mid-2020s; a small market with a long shoulder-season problem.
Nepal
Everest climbing Sherpas including summit bonuses, 2020s; IFMGA-certified Nepali guides with foreign clients earn several multiples of this.

谁在雇用他们
Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix
The world's oldest and largest guide company, founded 1821 — a cooperative of roughly 240 independent guides that sets the template the profession still follows.
Exum Mountain Guides
Grand Teton National Park concession with roots in the 1920s guide service of Paul Petzoldt and Glenn Exum — among the oldest guide services in the Americas.
Adventure Consultants
The New Zealand expedition operator founded by Rob Hall and Gary Ball in the early 1990s; central to commercial Everest's history and still a leading 8,000 m guiding company.
Seven Summit Treks
Kathmandu-based and Sherpa-owned, the largest Everest operator of the 2020s — the flagship of Nepal's takeover of its own guiding industry.
Zermatters
Zermatt's mountain-guide and snow-sports organisation, heir to the local guides' association that built the Matterhorn trade in the 19th century.
Jagged Globe
Sheffield-based British operator guiding expeditions from the Alps to Everest since the late 1980s, and a major employer of UK and IFMGA freelance guides.
需求去向何方
Demand is growing faster than the profession can certify people. Industry bodies valued global adventure tourism in the hundreds of billions of dollars in the mid-2020s with double-digit annual growth, while the IFMGA pipeline — entrance exams, multi-year training, examiner capacity — deliberately admits only a trickle; popular guides in the Alps and on the Seven Summits are booked seasons ahead.
Nepal is the market's growth engine and its fault line. A record 478 foreign Everest permits in 2023, Nepali-owned operators undercutting Western prices, and post-2014 insurance mandates have expanded and formalized high-altitude work — but pay for rank-and-file climbing Sherpas still trails certified-guide rates by an order of magnitude, which is exactly why NNMGA certification numbers keep climbing.
The long-term constraint is physical: shrinking glaciers, shifting seasons and rockfall-prone summers are rearranging the Alpine product toward spring skiing, autumn rock and remote objectives. Guides who can requalify their repertoire — and clients — around a changing mountain range face more demand than they can serve; the melting itself, so far, has created work rather than destroyed it.
