FTX timeline -- 2017 Alameda to the 2024 sentence

Ten dated marks from Alameda's founding through the November 2022 collapse, cooperating pleas, the 2023 verdict, and the 2024 sentence.

The collapse year is 2022. The criminal case occupies 2022-2024.

These marks are the ones the trial stipulations and the major wire services agree on.

Timeline

  1. Alameda Research

Bankman-Fried founds Alameda Research as a crypto trading firm, later the sibling entity at the center of the criminal case.

  2. FTX founded

The exchange brand launches and grows through 2020-2021 with tokens, sponsorships, and a Bahamas headquarters story.

  3. Private peak, then stress

FTX is still a high private-market valuation earlier in 2022 as crypto prices fall. Lending and affiliated-firm risk rise in the sector after other failures.

  4. CoinDesk balance sheet

On 2 November CoinDesk publishes the Alameda balance-sheet story. Zhao's FTT comments follow. Withdrawals spike.

  5. Chapter 11

On 11 November FTX and affiliates file in Delaware. Ray becomes CEO. Bankman-Fried leaves control of the estate.

  6. Arrest in Nassau

On 12 December Bahamian authorities arrest Bankman-Fried on a U.S. request. Extradition to the Southern District of New York follows.

  7. Cooperating pleas begin

Ellison, Wang, and later Singh plead guilty in late 2022 and 2023, collapsing much of the contested 'inner circle' story.

  8. Trial and verdict

Trial opens in October. On 2 November the jury convicts on all seven counts. Bankman-Fried had testified in his own defense.

  9. Sentence

On 28 March Kaplan imposes 25 years and forfeiture. Notice of appeal follows.

  10. Estate recoveries

Bankruptcy status reports describe large recoveries relative to early 2022-2023 fears, a civil fact often misread as rewriting the verdict.

After March 2024 the live files are appeal and distributions; the jury's 2023 findings are the criminal core.
