Research on nature and nurture runs from Francis Galton (1869) through later critiques. Mechanisms are interacting systems.

Findings
- 1869 · Francis Galton — Eminence clusters in families The clustering is real in his tables; the leap to innate racial hierarchy is not a finding this atlas accepts.
- 1904 · Charles Spearman — Positive manifold / g Tests intercorrelate. That statistical fact does not license cranial typology or group league tables.
- 1934 · Lev Vygotsky — Development is social What a learner can do with a more capable partner is the instructional target, not a frozen score.
- 1979 · Thomas Bouchard — Reared-apart twins resemble Minnesota twins made genetic influence vivid in the press; critics still flag volunteer bias and media overclaim.
- 1990s · Sandra Scarr — Good-enough environments Scarr argued that, above a threshold, many homes are “functionally equivalent” for some outcomes — a claim still debated for schools.
- 2010s · Robert Plomin — Polygenic prediction DNA scores predict educational attainment modestly. They are not classroom sorting tools and fail across many ancestries.
Mechanisms
- Reaction norms — The same genotype can yield different skill under different training, nutrition and stress. Graphs, not slogans, are the model.
- Evocative correlation — A child who sings in tune draws lessons; a child who solves puzzles early draws a maths circle. The environment is partly elicited.
- Active niche-picking — Adolescents choose peers, instruments and games that fit emerging strengths — culture then amplifies the starting difference.
- Limitation of shared home — In many twin samples, the family that siblings share explains less adult variance than people expect. Unique experiences and genes take more of the rest.
Evidence
Largest, most replicated behavioural-genetic literature — still sample-bound.
Separate home from pedigree with their own selection biases.
Replicated hits, small effects, poor cross-ancestry portability.
Training and schooling change means; they do not erase all rank-order.
Not a valid talent science. Confounded and historically abused.
Debates
- Heritability versus educability — A trait can be heritable in a population and still move under teaching. The two numbers answer different questions.
- What counts as environment — Hours of instruction, lead exposure, stereotype threat, language of the test and famine are not one variable called “nurture”.
- Who is missing from the samples — Twin registries and GWAS cohorts under-represent the world’s children. Exporting their coefficients as universal law is a method error.
Nature and nurture: size the claim to the study. Interaction, not a 50/50 slogan, is the default model.
