Practice means designed work with feedback — Ericsson’s construct, not Gladwell’s hour ticket.
Where Macnamara et al. 2014 published domain bands (games ~26%, music ~21%, sports ~18%, education ~4%), this page uses those rounded figures and does not invent new precision.
Steps
- Pick a bounded task
45–90 minutes, clear end.
The beeper era’s unit.
- Set a hard-enough goal
Slightly above last week.
Channel, not comfort.
- Prepare feedback
Metronome, tests, mirror.
Information inside the hour.
- Remove one interrupt
Phone out of the room.
Cheap and decisive.
- Note the state once
Absorbed / bored / anxious.
One word is enough.
- Adjust tomorrow
Move challenge or skill support.
The figure is a loop.
Checklist
- Goal visible — The material says what “done” is.
- Challenge high — Boredom is a design error.
- Skill supported — Anxiety is also a design error.
- Feedback inside the hour — Not only a grade next term.
- Interrupts listed — What broke the last attempt.
- Not confused with practice pain — Some growth hours will not feel like flow.
- Ethics named — What the absorption serves.
- Complexity can rise — Same task forever is a rut.
Drills
- Two-number log — After each block: challenge 1–9, skill 1–9. Plot the week.
- Interrupt census — Tally breaks. The census is usually uglier than memory.
- Constraint raise — Same task, one harder rule (tempo, time, materials).
- Hint ladder — Three prepared hints so challenge can stay high.
- Purpose sentence — One line on who the work is for. Good Work in miniature.
Pitfalls
- Chasing the feeling — The state is a by-product of a well-set task.
- Calling all fun “flow” — The high–high cell is specific.
- Ignoring Ericsson hours — Ugly drills still build the skill that later flows.
- Tooling attention for harm — Games and feeds can be flow-shaped traps.
Tools
- A timer and a closed door — ESM’s household cousins.
- Difficulty sliders — In software, sport drills, graded repertoire.
- Experience-sampling apps — Modern beepers. Still self-report.
- A mentor who raises complexity — Nakamura’s relational lever.
Flow: design the hour; retire the poster. Education is not a diagnosis.
