Flow

Develop

Growing flow as a system of catalysts, windows and supports — educational, not diagnostic.

Development here follows Gagné-like honesty: aptitudes, practice and catalysts. Flow is not a finished essence.

Windows differ by domain. A closed sport window is not a closed writing window. Read the clocks.

Stages

  1. Name the task

One activity with a finish line.

Vague “be creative” will not channel.

  2. Rate skill and demand

    Two 1–9 numbers.

The original classroom version of the figure.

  3. Move one axis

Easier task or a hint; harder goal or a constraint.

    Design, not mood talk.

  4. Cut interrupts

One closed door, one silenced feed.

    Attention is the medium.

  5. Debrief affect

    Absorbed, bored, anxious?

    Vocabulary from 1975 still works.

  6. Raise complexity later

Yesterday’s flow task becomes today’s boredom.

Skill grew — that is the point.

Supports

Flow: catalysts and windows do the daily work. Destiny talk is the failure mode.
