One of the first countries in Europe to establish a commercial squash-center culture. The Dutch Squash Federation, founded in 1938, built its player base around courts attached to city fitness complexes rather than dedicated clubs, and on the strength of that infrastructure has hosted the World Championship three times: the 1988 men's event in Amsterdam, the 1989 women's event in Warmond, and the 2011 men's event in Rotterdam. The Netherlands' only world champion is Vanessa Atkinson, who beat Natalie Grinham in the 2004 final and held world number one from December 2005 to July 2006. Interestingly, Grinham, her opponent in that final, later went on to compete for the Netherlands herself. On the men's side, Laurens Jan Anjema held a spot near the top of European rankings for years. Individual titles are few, but in tournament hosting and club infrastructure, the Netherlands remains one of the central pillars of European squash.

Rivalry

The Netherlands' opponent was always Australia. Atkinson's 2004 world title and her ascent to world number one both came at the tail end of the period when Australian players dominated the women's game.
