A case of a single player lifting an entire national program. The Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia formed on June 25, 1972, and the National Squash Centre at Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur anchors the national program. Nicol David won eight world titles, in 2005, 2006, 2008 through 2012, and 2014, the most in women's World Championship history, and also won Commonwealth Games women's singles gold in both Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014. Her success turned squash into a Malaysian national priority sport, and government funding and a junior development system were built on top of it. On the men's side, Ong Beng Hee and Azlan Iskandar held places near the world top ten, while on the women's side, Low Wee Wern was followed by Sivasangari Subramaniam, who returned to the world top ten after recovering from a car accident, with Ng Eain Yow carrying the men's side forward. Malaysia has also hosted the men's and women's World Championship four times.

Malaysia's rival was always Egypt. Egyptian players both ended Nicol David's nine-year run at world number one and beat her in the quarterfinals on home soil in Kuala Lumpur in April 2016.
