The best per-capita output in the sport. Squash New Zealand, founded in 1932, has produced six individual world titles and four world number ones, figures that match nations with more than ten times its population. The center of it is Susan Devoy, who won four World Opens, in 1985, 1987, 1990 and 1992, and eight British Opens, holding world number one from April 1984 to February 1993. On the men's side, Ross Norman took the country's only world title by ending Jahangir Khan's 555-match win streak in the 1986 Toulouse final. Leilani Rorani reached world number one in 2000 and Carol Owens in 2002, with Owens compiling the unusual record of a world title once as an Australian in 2000 and again as a New Zealander in 2003. Paul Coll became the first New Zealand man to reach world number one, in 2022. A World Team Championship title, however, still eludes the country.

Rivalry
Through the 1980s and early 1990s, the women's game was effectively a two-nation contest between New Zealand and Australia. Susan Devoy beat Michelle Martin in the 1992 Vancouver World Open final, and Martin took over that position the following year.
