The nation that first standardized court dimensions and ball specifications, and still holds Europe's deepest club and league base. England Squash, successor to the Squash Rackets Association founded in 1928, is anchored at the National Squash Centre in Manchester. Individual titles are thin, only three each for men and women, but England is dominant in team competition, with 12 World Team Championship titles, five men's and seven women's, trailing only Australia and Egypt. Nick Matthew became world champion three times, in 2010, 2011 and 2013, and the 2010 final in Al Khobar was an all-English affair against James Willstrop. Lee Beachill reached world number one in 2004 and James Willstrop in 2012, and Peter Nicol, who switched allegiance from Scotland in 2001, competed for England thereafter. On the women's side, Martine Le Moignan, Cassie Campion and Laura Massaro each won one world title. Yorkshire's Pontefract Squash Club, coached by Malcolm Willstrop, has produced two world number ones.

Rivalry
English squash's biggest box-office fixture in the early 2010s was entirely domestic. The rivalry between Sheffield's Nick Matthew and Pontefract-raised James Willstrop ran all the way to World Championship finals, and the relationship between the two was, unusually for this sport, openly cold.
