Major honours
With 22 individual world titles and 17 World Team Championships, Australia remains, by career totals alone, this sport's biggest power. Squash Australia was founded in 1934; Adelaide has hosted the men's World Championship three times, and Brisbane hosted the first-ever women's World Championship in 1976. On the men's side, Geoff Hunt won four of the first five World Championships before Rodney Martin added a title in 1991 in Adelaide, Rodney Eyles in 1997, and David Palmer in 2002 and 2006. The women's lineage runs deeper still. Heather McKay's 16 straight British Open titles and first two world titles were followed by three from Michelle Martin, five from Sarah Fitz-Gerald, and one each from Rhonda Thorne, Vicki Cardwell and Rachael Grinham. Chris Dittmar reached four World Championship finals from 1987 to 1992 and lost every one, yet still reached world number one in 1993. Since the 2000s, the talent pipeline has thinned noticeably.

Rivalry
The men's axis was always Pakistan. Geoff Hunt's rivalry with the Khan dynasty defined the 1970s and early 1980s, while on the women's side, Australia and New Zealand split the British Open and World Open between them throughout the 1980s.
