The most successful program on the European continent, off a startlingly late start. France had only fifteen squash courts as late as 1974, but that grew to nearly 300 by 1980, the year the French Squash Rackets Federation split off from the tennis federation on December 22, later renaming to its current form in 1989. That commercial-court boom produced two world champions. Thierry Lincou beat Lee Beachill in a five-game battle in the 2004 Doha final to win France's first world title and reached world number one the same year. Gregory Gaultier lost four World Championship finals, in 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2013, before finally winning in 2015 in Bellevue. French players have reached the men's World Championship final seven times overall, more than any nation except Egypt, Pakistan and Australia. On the women's side, Camille Serme held a spot near the world top tier for years, and Victor Crouin came up through the American college circuit before settling into the pro game.
