This sport's most dramatic story of rise and collapse: three straight European titles followed by bankruptcy. Founded in January 1938 as IK Vagsbygd before later taking the Vipers name, the club played out of the 2,200-seat Aquarama. It won its first Norwegian league title in 2017-18, ending Larvik's 18-year streak, then won seven straight through 2023-24, adding seven Norwegian Cups along the way. It won the Champions League three years running, in 2021, 2022 and 2023, the first-ever European title and the first-ever streak of titles by a Norwegian club. Its roster at the time featured Katrine Lunde, Nora Mork and Henny Reistad together. But that roster cost more than Norwegian league revenue could sustain. Financial trouble surfaced in October 2024, and on January 13, 2025, the club declared bankruptcy and every player's contract was terminated.

Rivalry
Domestically, dethroning Larvik, the club that had long dominated Norwegian women's handball, was Vipers' starting point. In Europe, the rivalry with Gyor was the central axis, and its 2021-2023 three-peat also marked the years it broke Gyor's grip on the title.
