Major honours
The symbol of German handball, and the club that made the Bundesliga the richest handball league in the world. Founded in 1904, it plays at the 10,250-seat Wunderino Arena, the largest dedicated arena on this list. Its 23 Bundesliga titles are a league record, and it has also taken the DHB-Pokal 13 times. In Europe it won its first Champions League in 2007 and returned to the top in 2010, 2012 and 2020 for four titles overall. Kiel's peak years ran on Scandinavian talent: Sweden's Magnus Wislander held the pivot position for twelve seasons, and Thierry Omeyer, Nikola Karabatic, Filip Jicha, Niklas Landin and Sander Sagosen all passed through in sequence. In the 2011-12 season Kiel finished all 34 Bundesliga matches unbeaten, still the only undefeated championship season in the league's history.

Rivalry
The Nordderby against SG Flensburg-Handewitt, 90 kilometers to the north, is German handball's biggest rivalry. Flensburg's 30-28 win over Kiel in the 2014 Champions League final remains the defining moment of the fixture.
