The production line of France's golden generation, and the only French club to have won the Champions League. Founded in 1982 as Cosmos Montpellier, it plays home matches at the 3,000-seat Palais des Sports Rene Bougnol, with bigger fixtures held at the 9,000-seat Sud de France Arena. Most of its 14 French league titles came between 1995 and 2012, and it has also taken the Coupe de France 15 times. It has reached the top of Europe twice: first in 2003, and again fifteen years later in 2018. But the club's real legacy isn't its trophies; it's its alumni list. Nikola Karabatic and Thierry Omeyer developed here before leading the golden era of the French national team that began in 2008, and Michael Guigou, Didier Dinart and Jerome Fernandez also passed through Montpellier.

Rivalry

The current axis is the rivalry with Paris Saint-Germain, which has dominated the French league since 2013. Montpellier has lost the domestic title race but still leads PSG on Champions League titles with two, and that asymmetry defines the relationship between the two clubs.
