Drafting and the slipstream
Drafting is the foundation of every road tactic. Riding directly behind another rider places you in their slipstream, cutting aerodynamic drag so a sheltered rider in the bunch can expend as much as 25 to 40 percent less power than the rider driving the pace at the front. At racing speed, air resistance accounts for the vast majority of a cyclist's effort, so the shelter of the wheel in front is a decisive resource. This single physical fact explains why a solo attacker rarely holds off an organised chase, why teams sacrifice riders to protect a leader from the wind, and why a rider caught alone in a crosswind is in mortal danger. Managing when to sit in and when to spend energy on the front is the essence of race craft.
Controlling the race
A team with a leader to protect or a jersey to defend takes responsibility for controlling the peloton, riding on the front to dictate a tempo that keeps dangerous moves in check without exhausting its own leader. Control is a balance: too slow and the break gains too much time or attacks fly; too fast and the domestiques burn out before the finale. Teams also control by numbers, keeping riders around the leader to close gaps, chase attacks and shepherd him to the base of the final climb. Losing control, through crashes, crosswinds or an under-strength team, is how favourites lose Grand Tours, which is why squad depth and tactical discipline matter as much as the leader's own legs.
The breakaway
A breakaway is the calculated gamble of escaping the bunch to chase a stage win or classification points. Its success hinges on the composition of the group, the cooperation within it, and the willingness of teams behind to chase. Riders in a break must share the workload evenly, rotating through the wind, or the escape stalls and is caught. Break specialists read races shrewdly, joining moves the peloton is likely to let go, often on hilly stages where the sprinters' teams cannot control the pace. The peloton manages the gap with an elastic tension, timing the catch, so a successful breakaway is as much about psychology and arithmetic, judging whether the chase has waited too long, as it is about raw strength.
The lead-out train
On a flat finish, a sprinter's team assembles a lead-out train to deliver their finisher to the line at maximum speed with minimum exposure. Riders line up single file and take turns hammering on the front, each pulling until spent before swinging off, ratcheting the pace above 65 km/h so no rival can attack and the sprinter stays sheltered until the last moment. The final lead-out man is the most important, launching the sprint from around 200 metres so the sprinter can leap from his wheel with a clear run. A perfect train removes chaos from the sprint, but it demands flawless positioning; one misplaced rider or a touched wheel can unravel the whole line and bring down the peloton behind.
Echelons and crosswinds
In a sidewind, riders cannot draft in a straight line and instead fan across the road in diagonal echelons, each seeking shelter at an angle to the rider ahead. Since the road has finite width, an echelon fits only so many riders, and everyone beyond that number is forced into the exposed gutter, where they cannot hold the wheel and are dropped. Strong teams weaponise this, accelerating into a crosswind section to guillotine the bunch into pieces and strand rivals caught too far back. The result can be race-deciding time gaps on a stage that looked flat and dull. Survival demands constant vigilance and front-of-bunch positioning whenever the route turns exposed to the wind.
Domestique roles and hierarchy
Most riders in a race are not there to win but to serve a leader, and these domestiques, from the French for servant, are the backbone of team tactics. They fetch bottles and food from the team car, shelter the leader from the wind, chase down attacks, pace him back after punctures, and sacrifice their own race to set tempo on the climbs. A super-domestique might be a champion in his own right who rides in support, delivering the leader deep into a mountain stage before peeling off exhausted. The strength and discipline of a leader's domestiques often decide a Grand Tour as much as the leader's own form, which is why team budgets are spent building depth around a captain.
Climbing and GC selection
The mountains are where the general classification is truly decided, because on a steep gradient speeds drop, aerodynamic drafting matters far less, and raw power-to-weight, watts per kilogram, becomes decisive. GC contenders use their teams to set a punishing tempo that strips away weaker rivals, then attack with a sharp acceleration to open a gap that the leader must either match immediately or lose. Timing is everything: attack too early and you blow up before the summit; too late and you gain nothing. Summit finishes and long final climbs are the classic launchpads, and a single well-judged mountain attack can win or lose a three-week race, which is why climbers who can also time trial are the most complete GC riders.
The time trial and pacing
The individual time trial, the race of truth, strips racing to its essence: one rider alone against the clock, with no teammates and no drafting allowed. Success depends on aerodynamics, honed in wind tunnels through position, skinsuit and helmet, and on flawless pacing, holding a target power just below the threshold that would cause the rider to blow up before the finish. A time trialist rides by feel and by the numbers on the power meter, spreading effort evenly across the course and diving through corners without losing momentum. Because it can create the largest gaps outside the mountains, the time trial rewards a specific talent, and the greatest all-rounders, from Anquetil to Indurain to the modern GC riders, have used it to win Grand Tours.
How it evolved
Tactics have swung between control and chaos. The power-meter era of the 2010s, pioneered by Team Sky, made racing a science of measured watts, with a team train grinding rivals into submission at a steady, unattackable pace. It was effective and often criticised as dull, reducing the mountains to a war of attrition rather than daring attacks.
The current generation has reversed the trend. Riders like Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard attack from far out, gambling on aggression over calculation, and better nutrition, riders now fuel on up to 120 grams of carbohydrate an hour, lets them sustain repeated efforts that would once have been suicidal. Combined with aero bikes and real-time data, the result is a faster, more explosive style of racing that has brought the excitement of the Merckx era back to the modern peloton.
