Major honours
The Malayan Badminton Association, formed in November 1934, was reorganized in 1964 into today's Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), and the national team trains at the Malaysia Badminton Academy in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur. Malaya was the sport's first great power. Starting with the inaugural Thomas Cup in 1949, it won three straight titles through 1955, then added 1967 and 1992 for five in total. Wong Peng Soon defined that era, winning the All England singles title four times through the 1950s. Olympic gold, however, has never come. Since 1992 Malaysia has taken 6 silvers and 5 bronzes, three of the silvers won consecutively by Lee Chong Wei in 2008, 2012 and 2016. Its two World Championship golds came in men's doubles at Tokyo 2022 (Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik) and mixed doubles at Paris 2025 (Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei).

Rivalry
The relationship with Indonesia was sealed when early Thomas Cup supremacy shifted from Malaya to Indonesia at the 1958 Singapore final, and the two nations' clashes remain Southeast Asia's fiercest. In singles, Lee Chong Wei and Lin Dan's 40 career meetings were, for a generation, the entire relationship between Malaysia and China.
