The Chinese Badminton Association was founded in Wuhan in September 1958, and the national team runs on a centralized structure that funnels players selected from provincial sports schools into the National Sports Training Bureau in Beijing. Formally entering international competition after the 1981 IBF reunification, the program has topped nearly every metric in the sport since. Of the 44 Olympic golds contested from 1992 through 2024, exactly half — 22 — went to China, and in London 2012 it became the only nation ever to sweep all five gold medals at a single Games. At the World Championships, China has amassed 72 golds through the 2025 Paris edition, more than triple second-placed Indonesia. In team competition it holds the record with 16 Uber Cup and 14 Sudirman Cup titles, and added a twelfth Thomas Cup in 2026 by beating France 3-1 in Herning. It is this across-the-board depth, with no discipline left exposed, that separates China from every other program.

Rivalry
The Thomas Cup rivalry with Indonesia is the sport's biggest national feud, running for nearly half a century since China first took the title from Indonesia in London in 1982. In the individual game, Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei's 40 career meetings long defined the relationship between China and Malaysia.
