The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) was founded in Bandung in May 1951, and since the 1980s the national team has trained at the Cipayung residential compound in East Jakarta. Clubs including PB Djarum and PB Jaya Raya raise juniors and funnel them up to Cipayung, a two-tier pipeline with no real equivalent anywhere else in the sport. Indonesia's 14 Thomas Cups remain the all-time record, starting with a 6-3 win over Malaya in Singapore in 1958 and stretching to seven titles in the eight editions held between 1958 and 1979. The host nation also won the inaugural Sudirman Cup in Jakarta in 1989. At Barcelona 1992, Susi Susanti and Alan Budikusuma won gold on the same day to deliver Indonesia's first-ever Olympic gold medals, and by 2024 the country had added 8 Olympic golds and 23 World Championship golds. The deafening noise of a full house at Istora Senayan remains the sport's most famous home advantage.

Rivalry
The rivalry with China over the Thomas Cup is close to everything, and the 3-0 win in Aarhus in 2016 that reclaimed the cup after 19 years remains its recent peak. The Southeast Asian derby with Malaysia, dating to the 1958 final Indonesia won to first reach the summit, still carries special weight.
