One of Britain's oldest and most successful athletics clubs, founded in Birmingham in 1877, and a model example of how European club athletics sustains itself. The British club system runs on weekend league fixtures and cross-country championships, with ten-year-olds through national team members wearing the same club vest and competing at the same meets. Birchfield has produced national team athletes within that structure for over a century. Its best-known name is Denise Lewis, the Sydney 2000 heptathlon gold medallist, while triple jumper Ashia Hansen set an indoor world record of 15.16m in Valencia in 1998 and won an indoor World Championship title. Mark Lewis-Francis, who anchored Britain's 4x100m relay gold over the United States at Athens 2004, and Katharine Merry, the 2000 400m bronze medallist, were also club members. Its home venue, Alexander Stadium, was rebuilt as the main stadium for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
