Founded in 1999 by Stephen Francis and Bruce James at Jamaica's University of Technology in Kingston, the club's name is short for 'Maximising Velocity and Power.' MVP reversed the flow of Jamaican talent leaving for American college scholarships, becoming the first organization to prove athletes could train at home and still reach the world's summit. Asafa Powell set the 100m world record twice, in 2005 and 2007; Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce became the first Jamaican woman to win Olympic 100m gold, at Beijing 2008, then defended it at London 2012 and won the World Championship 100m title five times. Elaine Thompson-Herah completed back-to-back 100m/200m Olympic doubles at the 2016 and 2021 Games, the closest any woman has come to matching Bolt's sprint achievements. Francis's training was notorious for its extreme volume and strength work, a method that underpinned two decades of Jamaican dominance in women's sprinting.
