Major honours
The symbol of American collegiate athletics and the heart of Eugene, the city known as 'Track Town USA.' Bill Bowerman, who led the team from 1948 to 1972, produced four NCAA team titles and dozens of individual champions, and along the way hand-built shoes to fit his runners' feet, founding what would become Nike with Phil Knight in 1964. His protege Steve Prefontaine held seven American records simultaneously, from 2,000m to 10,000m, and sold out Hayward Field, becoming a myth of American distance running after his death in a car accident at 24 in 1975. Later came Ashton Eaton, who set the decathlon world record twice; Matthew Centrowitz, who won the 1500m at Rio 2016; and Mac Wilkins, the 1976 discus gold medallist. Hayward Field, completely rebuilt in 2020, hosted the first World Championships ever held on American soil, in 2022.
