A program that built an unmatched dynasty in American college sports under Irish-born coach John McDonnell, who led it from 1972 to 2008. Across cross country, indoor and outdoor track, McDonnell amassed 40 NCAA team titles, the most by any single coach in any sport. From 1984 through the 1990s, Arkansas repeatedly won all three national titles in a single year — a 'triple crown' — and achieved that feat four years running from 1992 to 1995. His method was to recruit heavily from Irish and British middle-distance prospects and develop them inside the American college system, later extending the approach into sprints and jumps. Athletes produced include Mike Conley, the 1992 Barcelona triple jump gold medallist, and Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown, a two-time Olympic 200m champion. The program's home track still carries McDonnell's name.
