Tailoring's pay statistics mislead unless the trade's split is kept in view. The official numbers mostly count alterations work — the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' median of about $35,000 for tailors, dressmakers and custom sewers in 2023 describes that reality — while the bespoke trade's earnings ladder, from piece-rate coat maker to Savile Row head cutter to house owner, runs several times higher and appears in no government table.
Geography compounds it. The same hour of coat-making commands radically different prices in London, Naples, Hong Kong and Chennai — which is why the trade's production has migrated toward lower-wage workshops for a century, and why the highest earners everywhere are not the fastest hands but the owners of client relationships.
薪酬阶梯
UK, Savile Row-style apprenticeship, mid-2020s; Germany's dual system pays roughly €700–1,100 a month during training.
UK, piece-rate coat and trouser makers, mid-2020s trade rates; skilled Neapolitan makers earn broadly comparable local wages.
UK, experienced bench tailors and trainee cutters at established houses, mid-2020s.
UK, head cutters at Savile Row and comparable London houses, mid-2020s trade reporting; the fit reputation of the house rides on this role.
Owner-cutters of established bespoke houses, London / Naples / New York; highly variable — the client list, not the needle, sets the ceiling.

Gieves & Hawkes
No. 1 Savile Row; military and royal tailors whose warrants span two centuries, and the house where Kathryn Sargent became the Row's first woman head cutter.
Kiton
Neapolitan luxury tailoring firm in Arzano employing hundreds of tailors — one of the largest concentrations of hand-tailoring skill on earth — and running its own school to train the next generation.

The Roman house founded by master tailor Nazareno Fonticoli in 1945, now part of Kering, with its tailoring workshops and school in Penne, Abruzzo.
W.W. Chan & Sons
Hong Kong bespoke house in the Shanghainese 'red gang' tailoring lineage, cutting full-canvas suits for a worldwide trunk-show clientele since the 1950s.
Angels Costumes
London costume house supplying film and television since 1840 — one of the largest single employers of cutters and costume tailors outside the luxury trade.
需求去向何方
Demand for the trade's surviving core is steady and, in places, growing: Savile Row houses report multi-month order books, Italian luxury tailoring exports keep expanding, and the scan-to-suit made-to-measure industry — which employs fitters and finishers, not just factories — has grown for a decade. The mass-market tailor, meanwhile, is not coming back; that customer left for ready-to-wear generations ago.
The clearest growth is at the humble end. Sustainability regulation, resale fashion and consumer repair culture are rebuilding alteration and mending demand across Europe and East Asia, and alterations is where most of the world's employed tailors already work — the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the occupation roughly stable, with most openings coming from replacing workers who retire.
Retirement is the operative word: the trade's binding constraint is a succession gap, with master tailors aging out faster than apprentices arrive in London, Naples and Tokyo alike. For a young entrant with trained hands, that inversion — scarce skills, aging competition, global clientele — is the strongest market position the craft has offered in half a century.
