These reward exactly the original-reporting skills that automation cannot supply, and hire far fewer people than the classifieds once did.
Geography and risk shape the rest. Press-freedom conditions push journalists into exile newsrooms serving audiences in Russia, Iran and elsewhere from abroad, while the deadliest year in CPJ's records (124 killed in 2024) marks conflict coverage as the trade's most demanded and least insurable work. Where the information environment degrades fastest, the market value of a verified fact quietly rises.
