The Maldives is a chain of atolls in the Indian Ocean whose recreational water is house-reef snorkelling, channel dives (kandu), and thilas (pinnacles) with names that dive boats still use: HP Reef, Banana Reef, Maaya Thila, Fish Head. Baa Atoll, including Hanifaru Bay, became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011.
Wow factor is high. Accessibility is middling: seaplanes and speedboats sit between the airport island and a house reef. Seasonality follows the southwest and northeast monsoons more than a single winter. Risk is moderate: currents in channels, boats, and sun, not wreck-penetration scores.

Season
Northeast monsoon (roughly December-April) is the mass dry window on many central atolls. Hanifaru manta season is a plankton-and-monsoon story, often cited around May-November. Operators cancel channels in wind.
Agencies
Maldives EPA, atoll councils, UNESCO biosphere management for Baa. PADI/SSI cards are common on safari boats; they do not replace a Hanifaru brief.

What is a thila?
A submerged pinnacle inside an atoll, often dived as a circuit with current. Maaya Thila and Fish Head (Mushimasmingili Thila) are classic names.
What is Hanifaru Bay?
A Baa Atoll bay in the UNESCO biosphere where manta rays and sometimes whale sharks gather to feed. Snorkel rules, time slots and no-scuba rules have been used to manage crowds.
HP Reef and Banana Reef?
North Male Atoll sites that helped invent Maldivian recreational scuba in the 1970s-80s. They remain crowded classroom reefs.
Do visitors need a liveaboard?
No. Many house reefs are snorkel-excellent. Safari boats exist for channels and far thilas.
Is Fuvahmulah a typical atoll?
Fuvahmulah is a single-island atoll in the south with a different, sharper oceanic reputation (tigers, thresher talk). It is not a first-lagoon product.
