Hawaii is an isolated volcanic chain whose water culture includes surfing's public origin story, ticketed snorkel bays, and a few world-famous night dives. Hanauma Bay on Oahu is a marine life conservation district with timed tickets. Kealakekua Bay and Molokini are the other postcard snorkels. Kona's manta night dives are a light-and-plankton product with animal-welfare rules that keep tightening.
Wow factor is high. Accessibility is higher than Palau or Raja Ampat because of flight volume and shore entries, but currents, winter North Shore surf, and boat traffic keep risk mid-table. Seasonality is moderate: trades and winter swell rearrange the map more than a monsoon close-out.

Season
Summer trades often mean calmer south and west shores. Winter North Shore is a surf chapter, not a snorkel. Kona mornings are the usual manta and bay window. Humpback season (winter) adds boat rules.

Why does Hanauma need a ticket?
Decades of trampling and crowding produced a carrying-capacity system: video brief, closed days, timed entry. It is a management success, not a slight.
What is Act 104?
A 2018 Hawaii statute targeting sunscreen ingredients such as oxybenzone and octinoxate. Long sleeves work regardless of the chemistry debate.
Molokini?
A crescent tuff cone off Maui. The inner crater is the classic boat-snorkel; the back wall is a current dive. Morning trips are the culture.
Kealakekua Bay?
A marine life conservation district on Hawaii Island, reached by boat or a steep trail, famous for clear water and a monument shore. Theft and heat on the trail are real.
Kona manta nights?
A sit-dive or snorkel around lights that attract plankton, then mantas. Codes limit touching and light-in-eyes. See night-diving.
