The only top-tier program that runs without a centralized residential system, relying instead on a market of private clubs and college scholarships. Gymnasts belong to one of thousands of for-profit gyms, parents pay for training, and the federation's role is largely limited to selection and running the national team. Mary Lou Retton became the first American woman to win the Olympic all-around at Los Angeles in 1984, and the Magnificent Seven won the first women's Olympic team gold at Atlanta in 1996. From 2001 to 2018 the federation ran a de facto semi-national system through bimonthly camps at the Karolyi Ranch in Texas, but the ranch closed after the Larry Nassar case, and the federation replaced its entire leadership and reached a $380 million settlement in 2021 before rebuilding around a more decentralized system of verification camps. Even so, the women's team has stacked up team golds in 2012, 2016 and 2024 and seven Olympic all-around titles since 1984. The men's team has not won team gold since 1984, but reclaimed bronze at Paris 2024 for the first time in 16 years.

Rivalry
Through the 1990s and 2000s the sport's central axis was a three-way women's team battle with Russia and Romania. In the 2020s the opponents changed: Rebeca Andrade's Brazil broke the American run on floor and vault, and the overturned floor final result at Paris 2024 led to a legal dispute with Romania.
