Major honours
Founded in 1869, the Italian Gymnastics Federation is the country's oldest sports federation. Its early results were dominant: Alberto Braglia won the Olympic all-around in 1908 and 1912, and at Los Angeles 1932 Romeo Neri took the all-around while Italy won the men's team title. All four of Italy's men's team golds came between 1912 and 1932. A long gap followed until Yuri Chechi broke it, winning five straight World rings titles before adding Olympic gold at Atlanta 1996; Igor Cassina then took high bar at Athens 2004. The women's revival began at Brescia's Brixia club: Vanessa Ferrari won the World all-around title at Aarhus in 2006, and the Amato twins and Manila Esposito carried the lineage forward. At Paris 2024, Alice D'Amato won beam gold for Italy's first-ever women's Olympic gymnastics gold, and Italy also took women's team silver at the same Games.

Rivalry
In the early 20th century Italy competed with France and Switzerland for leadership of European gymnastics. Today the rivalry is a three-way fight with Britain and France for European Championship and Olympic women's team podiums, all three having reached an Olympic team podium for the first time only in the past decade.
