Major honours
A program that inherited the Soviet system's facilities and coaching lineage wholesale. Its training base remains the Ozero Krugloye camp north of Moscow, and as under the Soviets, national selection and permanent residential training sit at the center of the federation's operations. Its first post-independence result was men's team gold at Atlanta 1996, where Svetlana Khorkina also won uneven bars, beginning a run of dominance that lasted through Sydney 2000. Khorkina won the World all-around title in 1997, 2001 and 2003, a women's record until Biles, while Alexei Nemov took the all-around at Sydney 2000. In the 2010s, Aliya Mustafina won back-to-back Olympic uneven bars titles, and at Tokyo 2021 Russia, competing as the Russian Olympic Committee, swept both men's and women's team gold — its best result since the Soviet collapse. Since March 2022, however, Russian athletes have been excluded from FIG-sanctioned competition, keeping the team out of the entire Paris cycle.

Rivalry
The team rivalry with the American women was the sport's biggest box-office draw from 2012 to 2021, and the Russian Olympic Committee's win in Tokyo broke that pattern. On the men's side, a long-running dispute with Ukraine over the legitimacy of the shared Soviet coaching lineage has persisted.
