Major honours
The longest-lived technical school in men's gymnastics. A university club lineage centered on Nippon Sport Science University and Juntendo University forms the team's real development base, and coaching emphasizes line, amplitude and a stuck landing over raw difficulty. Japan won five consecutive Olympic men's team titles from Rome 1960 to Montreal 1976, built around Yukio Endo and Sawao Kato; Kato's eight Olympic gold medals remain the most of any male gymnast. After a two-decade gap behind the Soviets and China, Kohei Uchimura revived the program with an unbeaten all-around run from 2009 to 2016 and led Japan back to team gold at Rio in 2016, its first in twelve years. In the 2020s, Daiki Hashimoto won the all-around in Tokyo and Shinnosuke Oka in Paris, proving the lineage unbroken. In the Paris 2024 team final, Japan overtook China by 0.532 points on a last-rotation reversal.

Rivalry
Japan contested the men's team title with the Soviet Union through the 1960s and 70s and with China from the 2000s onward. The pattern of China leading on difficulty and Japan answering on execution has repeated for two decades, and the Asian Games and Asian Championships function as an unofficial preview of that fight.
