Major honours
A state-run pipeline running from provincial sports schools up through provincial teams to the national squad in Beijing forms this program's skeleton. Li Ning announced China's arrival on the international stage at Los Angeles in 1984 with six medals, three of them gold, and the following two decades converted that into systematic dominance. Li Xiaopeng won the men's all-around in 1996, China took its first Olympic men's team gold at Sydney 2000, and at its home Games in Beijing 2008 it won both team titles while Yang Wei took the all-around. The program's strengths are distinct: on rings, parallel bars and pommel horse, apparatus governed by raw strength and precise angles, China has set the world standard for four decades. Zou Jingyuan's parallel bars routines, which regularly draw execution scores in the high 9s, are the benchmark of the discipline, and a lineage runs from Chen Yibing to Liu Yang on rings. The women's team, by contrast, has drifted from the team podium since 2008.

Rivalry
It is barely an exaggeration to say the men's team rivalry with Japan is the entire story. The two nations traded the gold medal across six Olympics from Athens 2004 to Paris 2024, and in Paris two falls on the final high bar rotation cost China the title by 0.532 points.
