Major honours
Founded in 1888, but internationally competitive only more than a century later. The turning point was National Lottery funding introduced after 1997, which built a permanent support system centered on the Lilleshall National Sports Centre and began producing results. Beth Tweddle became Britain's first World champion at Aarhus in 2006 and took uneven bars bronze at London 2012, where Louis Smith also won pommel horse silver and the men's team won its first Olympic team bronze in a century. Then at Rio 2016, Max Whitlock swept floor and pommel horse gold in a single day, Britain's first-ever Olympic gymnastics gold, and he defended the pommel horse title at Tokyo 2021 to reach three career Olympic golds. Tokyo also brought the women's team its first Olympic team medal since 1928. However, the 2022 Whyte Review documented systemic abuse and weight-management pressure in the coaching culture that produced these results.

Rivalry
The pommel horse rivalry with Ireland's Rhys McClenaghan has been the central storyline of British men's gymnastics over the past decade. The two have met repeatedly in European and World finals, and McClenaghan took the Paris 2024 pommel horse gold.
