A program that inherited the most productive regional school within Soviet gymnastics outright. The sports-school lineages of Kyiv, Donetsk and Lviv had already filled a large share of the Soviet national team roster, and just five years after independence, Lilia Podkopayeva confirmed the program's viability by sweeping the Olympic all-around and floor titles at Atlanta 1996. On the men's side, Oleg Verniaiev won parallel bars gold at Rio 2016, and in the all-around at the same Games he led into the final rotation before finishing 0.099 behind Kohei Uchimura for silver. Vault specialist Igor Radivilov and all-arounder Illia Kovtun carried the lineage forward. Everything changed after February 2022: many training facilities have been destroyed or rendered unusable, and the national team now trains by borrowing gyms across Europe, yet continues to produce World Championship finalists.

The relationship with Russia defines almost everything about this program. The two nations, splitting from the same coaching lineage, met repeatedly at European and World Championships after 1996, and Russia's exclusion from international competition since 2022 has erased the rivalry itself.
