Major honours
Korean gymnastics is a textbook case of a specialization strategy reaching the world's summit through a single apparatus. Explosive leg power and a short preparation window suited vault perfectly: Yeo Hong-chul won vault silver at Atlanta 1996, and two vaults now carry his name in the Code of Points. At Sydney 2000, Lee Joo-hyung won parallel bars silver and high bar bronze, and at the Athens 2004 men's all-around, Kim Dae-eun took silver and Yang Tae-young bronze. A start-value error on Yang's parallel bars routine became the direct trigger for the sport's abandonment of the 10-point scale. Then at London 2012, Yang Hak-seon won vault gold for Korea's first-ever Olympic gymnastics gold, and the 6.4-difficulty vault he devised now carries his name in the code. At Tokyo 2021, Shin Jae-hwan won vault gold and Yeo Seo-jeong took vault bronze, making Yeo Hong-chul and his daughter the first father-daughter Olympic medallists in Korean history.

Rivalry
China and Japan are the opponents at the Asian Games and Asian Championships, but the dispute that truly defined Korean gymnastics' identity was the 2004 Athens judging controversy. Yang Tae-young's disputed all-around gold-medal claim led to the suspension of an international judging panel and a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling, and it changed the sport's scoring system itself.
