Slovakia put itself on the technical-discipline map through a single racer, Petra Vlhova. Racing mainly slalom, Vlhova won a world championship gold and repeatedly finished near the top of the World Cup overall standings, and her slalom gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics gave Slovakia its first Olympic gold in the sport. She is one of a small group of racers who regularly shared the women's slalom podium with Mikaela Shiffrin from the late 2010s into the 2020s. Slovakia's training infrastructure and funding lag far behind traditions like Austria and Switzerland, but junior ski registration has grown domestically since Vlhova's success, widening the sport's base.
