Major honours
Sweden is the nation where a single racer redefined the standard for the technical disciplines. Ingemar Stenmark barely raced downhill from 1974 to 1989, yet combined 46 giant slalom wins and 40 slalom wins for 86 career victories, a record that stood as the all-time mark for either sex for 34 years until Mikaela Shiffrin surpassed it in 2023. He won both technical golds at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, coming from well behind after the first run each time. Stenmark was known for an economical style built on minimal upper-body movement and a precise line, and he retired in 1989 just before shaped skis arrived, the last great champion of the straight-ski era. Anja Parson and Frida Hansdotter later carried Sweden's women's slalom tradition to world-class results.

Rivalry
During the Stenmark era, duels with Austrian and Swiss technical racers were the biggest draw for Swedish ski fans.
