Major honours
Germany is the nation where alpine skiing made its Olympic debut. At the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games, the first combined event summing downhill and slalom times was won by Germany's Franz Pfnur and Christl Cranz, and Cranz went on to win twelve world titles between 1934 and 1939, still the all-time record for world championship golds by either sex. After the war, Rosi Mittermaier carried the German women's lineage forward, sweeping downhill and slalom gold at Innsbruck 1976. Since reunification, Maria Hoefl-Riesch won three Olympic golds across the 2010 and 2014 Games, showing world-class form in slalom and combined. Garmisch-Partenkirchen still hosts the Kandahar downhill each year, serving as the base of Germany's speed program.

Rivalry
In the 1930s Christl Cranz's biggest rivals were Austrian racers, and the two nations met frequently on the pre-war world championship stage.
