Italy is the nation a single racer, Alberto Tomba, turned alpine skiing into a national event. 'Tomba la Bomba' swept slalom and giant slalom at Calgary 1988 and defended his giant slalom title at Albertville 1992, becoming the first racer to win the same event at consecutive Games. He finished with 50 career wins, five Olympic medals and medals at three straight Olympics. More recently Sofia Goggia and Federica Brignone have kept Italy at the top of women's speed and technical events, with Brignone winning the overall Crystal Globe in 2025 at age 34. Italy has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, in 1956 and 2006, and the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games stage the men's downhill on Bormio's Stelvio course and the women's downhill at Cortina d'Ampezzo.
