With a population of roughly 40,000, Liechtenstein is considered the most successful alpine skiing nation per capita anywhere. Hanni Wenzel won slalom and giant slalom gold plus downhill silver at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, three medals at a single Games, putting her small principality on the Winter Olympic medal table for the first time. Her brother Andreas Wenzel also finished near the top of the World Cup overall standings repeatedly in the same era, and the years from the late 1970s into the early 1980s when the siblings competed together marked the peak of Liechtenstein skiing. Marco Buchel later carried the lineage forward through the 1990s and 2000s with a world championship gold and multiple World Cup podiums. Relative to its size, Liechtenstein's medal density is considered higher than even Austria's or Switzerland's.
