Ski Racing · Two runs, one mountain, hundredths of a second — the only sport where the athlete is the fastest object on the field.

Skiing itself is thousands of years old and Nordic in origin — a means of travel across flat and rolling snow. Alpine skiing, the practice of going downhill fast for its own sake, is barely a century old and was substantially invented by two men working in parallel: Hannes Schneider, who built the Arlberg technique and its teaching system at St. Anton in Austria from 1921, and the Englishman Arnold Lunn, who set the first modern slalom at Murren in Switzerland in 1922 and then spent two decades arguing downhill racing into the international programme.

From there the sport's history divides into clear phases: the pre-war codification and the first world championships at Murren in 1931; the post-war Olympic era of Sailer, Killy and Klammer; the founding of the World Cup in 1967, which turned racing into a season-long circuit with its own economics; the shaped-ski revolution of the 1990s that rewrote technique; and the modern era of Hirscher, Shiffrin and Odermatt, in which safety engineering, injection snow and a warming climate have become as central to the sport's future as anything happening on the clock.

Timeline

1921Hannes Schneider systematises downhill

Schneider opens his ski school at St. Anton am Arlberg and codifies the Arlberg technique — stem turns progressing to parallel — the first structured method for controlling speed on steep terrain. It becomes the world's dominant teaching system.

1922Arnold Lunn sets the first modern slalom

At Murren in Switzerland, Lunn stages a race through paired flags judged purely on time rather than on style, the format from which every slalom since descends. He founds the Kandahar Ski Club two years later.

1931First FIS world championships, Murren

FIS recognises downhill and slalom in 1930 and stages the first Alpine World Ski Championships a year later. Britain's Esme Mackinnon wins both women's events, making her the sport's first world champion.

1936Olympic debut at Garmisch

Alpine skiing enters the Winter Games with a single combined event of downhill and slalom. Germany's Franz Pfnur and Christl Cranz win; Cranz would collect twelve world titles between 1934 and 1939, still the record.

1952Giant slalom joins the programme

The Oslo Games add giant slalom, completing the three-event structure that lasted for decades. American Andrea Mead Lawrence wins the giant slalom and slalom, the first alpine double gold by a US skier.

1956Toni Sailer sweeps Cortina

The 20-year-old Austrian wins downhill, giant slalom and slalom at the Cortina Olympics, the first clean sweep in alpine history, taking the giant slalom by more than six seconds.

1960Metal skis and the egg position

Jean Vuarnet wins Olympic downhill at Squaw Valley on metal skis, using a low aerodynamic tuck later universally known as the egg. Wood disappears from elite racing within a decade.

1967The World Cup begins

Journalist Serge Lang, with coaches Bob Beattie and Honore Bonnet, launches a season-long points circuit. Jean-Claude Killy and Canada's Nancy Greene win the first Crystal Globes; Killy takes 12 of 16 races.

1968Killy's triple at Grenoble

On home snow Killy matches Sailer by winning all three alpine golds, the last man to do so. He retires at 24 and becomes the sport's first genuinely global commercial figure.

1976Klammer's ride at Innsbruck

Starting bib 15 under enormous home pressure, Franz Klammer beats defending champion Bernhard Russi by 0.33 seconds on the Patscherkofel in a run of controlled near-disaster still shown as the definitive downhill.

1978Stenmark begins his run

Ingemar Stenmark completes a third consecutive overall title and dominates the technical events for a decade, finishing with 86 World Cup victories — 46 in giant slalom and 40 in slalom — a record that stands 45 years.

1982Super-G enters the World Cup

A new discipline between giant slalom and downhill is added to the circuit, giving speed specialists a turning test and technicians a speed test. It reaches the Olympic programme at Calgary in 1988.

1988Tomba and the Calgary double

Alberto Tomba wins slalom and giant slalom in Calgary and turns alpine skiing into mainstream entertainment in Italy. He would collect 50 World Cup wins and medals at three consecutive Olympics.

1993The shaped ski arrives

Elan's deeply sidecut SCX reaches the market and carving spreads through racing within five years. Turns become arcs rather than skids, edge angles increase sharply, and technique changes more in a decade than in the previous forty years.

1998Hermann Maier's Nagano

Maier crashes catastrophically in the Olympic downhill, launched off the Hakuba course at speed, then returns days later to win both super-G and giant slalom. He takes four overall titles and scores a then-record 2,000 points in 1999-2000.

2002Janica Kostelic's four medals

The Croatian wins giant slalom, combined and slalom golds plus super-G silver at Salt Lake City, the greatest single Olympic haul in alpine history, achieved on knees that required nine operations.

2012FIS rewrites the giant slalom ski

Alarmed by knee injuries, FIS raises the minimum giant slalom sidecut radius to 35 metres and lengthens the skis. Racers protest that the equipment is harder to control; the radius is cut back to 30 metres in 2016.

2019Hirscher retires with eight globes

Marcel Hirscher walks away at 30 with eight consecutive overall World Cup titles, 67 race wins and seven world championship golds, a run of season-long dominance no alpine skier had approached.

2023Shiffrin passes Vonn and Stenmark

Mikaela Shiffrin overtakes Lindsey Vonn's women's record of 82 wins at Kranjska Gora in January, then breaks Stenmark's all-time mark of 86 at Kronplatz days later, becoming the winningest racer in World Cup history.

2025One hundred wins

Shiffrin wins her 100th World Cup race in the Sestriere slalom on 23 February, months after a serious abdominal injury in a Killington crash. Federica Brignone, at 34, takes the overall title in the same season.

The eras

1900s-1939

Inventing a sport out of a means of transport

For most of history, skis were a Nordic technology for moving across snow, and the idea of climbing a mountain purely to descend it quickly seemed eccentric. Two figures made alpine racing a sport. In Austria, Hannes Schneider took the raw technique of Arlberg locals and built a system out of it from 1921 — a progression of stem turns leading to parallel skiing that could be taught to beginners and refined by racers — and his St. Anton school exported the method worldwide, aided by the pioneering ski films of Arnold Fanck. In Switzerland, the Englishman Arnold Lunn ran the first modern slalom at Murren in 1922, insisting the result be settled by the clock rather than by judges, and then campaigned relentlessly inside FIS until downhill and slalom were formally recognised in 1930. The first Alpine World Ski Championships followed at Murren in 1931, where Esme Mackinnon won both women's events. Schneider and Lunn joined their clubs' names for the Arlberg-Kandahar in 1928, which functioned as the sport's de facto championship for a generation. Olympic recognition came at Garmisch in 1936 with a single combined event, won by Franz Pfnur and Christl Cranz. Cranz, who took twelve world titles between 1934 and 1939, was the first serial champion the sport produced. Then war closed the mountains, and Schneider, arrested by the Nazis, emigrated to New Hampshire, seeding American racing in the process.

1946-1966

The Olympic age and the coming of metal

Racing resumed at St. Moritz in 1948 and immediately became the winter Olympics' marquee attraction. The 1952 Oslo Games added giant slalom, giving the programme the shape it kept for decades, and Andrea Mead Lawrence's two golds proved the Alps had no monopoly on talent. Then came the era's defining performance: at Cortina in 1956, the 20-year-old Austrian Toni Sailer won all three alpine events, taking the giant slalom by more than six seconds, and followed it with three more golds at the 1958 world championships before retiring at 23. The Austrian and French national programmes, both state-supported and both ruthless, dominated the period. Technology moved as fast as technique. Wooden skis gave way to laminated and then metal construction, and at Squaw Valley in 1960 Jean Vuarnet won the downhill on metal Rossignols using a crouched aerodynamic tuck that the French called the egg — within a few winters, every downhiller in the world was skiing in it. Safety bindings, steel edges and lift infrastructure turned skiing into a mass leisure industry across the Alps, which in turn funded the racing. What the sport still lacked was a season: outside Olympic and world championship years, the great classic races at Kitzbuhel, Wengen and Chamonix had prestige but no common table.

1967-1979

The World Cup and the birth of the circuit

The idea arrived over a conversation in 1966 between the French journalist Serge Lang, the American coach Bob Caldwell Beattie and the French team director Honore Bonnet: link the existing classic races into a points championship so that the winter had a narrative arc and a champion. The first FIS World Cup ran in 1967 and Jean-Claude Killy won 12 of 16 races on his way to the inaugural Crystal Globe, with Canada's Nancy Greene taking the women's title. Killy completed the Olympic triple at Grenoble in 1968 and then retired at 24 into a commercial career that showed how much money the sport could now generate. The Cup transformed alpine skiing's economics, giving sponsors a season-long platform and television a weekly product. The decade's other icons were built for the new format: Annemarie Moser-Proll won five straight overall titles from 1971 and a sixth in 1979, including eleven consecutive downhill victories across 1972 and 1973, while Gustav Thoni's four overall titles made him Italy's first national ski hero. And in 1976, before a home crowd and a national television audience, Franz Klammer produced the run that fixed downhill in the popular imagination — bib 15, arms flailing, ski edges barely holding, 0.33 seconds clear of Bernhard Russi at Innsbruck.

1980-1998

Stenmark, Tomba and the last years of the straight ski

Ingemar Stenmark barely raced downhill and still became the sport's most prolific winner. Between 1974 and 1989 the Swede took 86 World Cup victories, 46 in giant slalom and 40 in slalom, three overall titles and two Olympic golds at Lake Placid in 1980, skiing with a stillness that made everyone else look busy. His record survived 34 years. The 1980s also changed the physical texture of slalom: rigid bamboo poles were replaced with hinged breakaway gates, which meant racers could stop steering around the pole and start skiing through it, knocking it flat with shin guards and forearm pads. Cross-blocking made lines dramatically tighter almost overnight. Alberto Tomba brought showmanship, winning double gold at Calgary in 1988, defending the giant slalom in 1992 and finishing with 50 wins; Marc Girardelli, racing for Luxembourg after a dispute with the Austrian federation, won five overall titles across every discipline; Vreni Schneider took 14 of the 16 races she entered in 1988-89. Super-G, added to the World Cup in 1982 and to the Olympics in 1988, completed the four-discipline structure. By the mid-1990s the deeply sidecut shaped ski, launched by Elan in 1993, was moving from novelty to necessity, and a generation raised on the new geometry — Hermann Maier, Bode Miller — was about to make the old technique obsolete.

1999-2019

Carving, specialisation and the age of Hirscher

The shaped ski rewired the sport. Where straight skis had been steered and skidded, carving skis could be tipped on edge and allowed to arc, so technique reorganised around edge angle, hip angulation and pressure applied early in the turn. Speeds and forces climbed, and so did knee injuries, which drove a cycle of equipment regulation that has continued ever since — most controversially the 2012 decision to force giant slalom skis to a 35-metre radius, reversed to 30 metres in 2016 after near-universal racer objection. Competitively, the period split between specialists and all-rounders. Hermann Maier survived a spectacular airborne crash in the 1998 Olympic downhill, won super-G and giant slalom gold days later, and then a near-fatal motorcycle accident in 2001, returning to win the overall title in 2004. Lindsey Vonn built the greatest speed record in women's history with 43 downhill wins and four overall titles, while Janica Kostelic's four Olympic golds and Kjetil Andre Aamodt's eight Olympic medals set championship benchmarks that still stand. Above them all sat Marcel Hirscher, who won eight consecutive overall Crystal Globes from 2012 to 2019 with 67 race wins and seven world titles, converting the World Cup from a contest into an annual formality before retiring at 30.

2020-present

Shiffrin, Odermatt and the questions the mountain is asking

Two racers define the current era. Mikaela Shiffrin, a World Cup winner at 17, has broken every victory record the sport keeps: past Lindsey Vonn's 82 in January 2023, past Ingemar Stenmark's 86 days later, and to 100 in the Sestriere slalom on 23 February 2025, a few months after a frightening crash at Killington left her with an abdominal injury. Her 17 wins and 2,204 points in 2018-19 remain single-season records. Marco Odermatt has done the men's equivalent from the other direction, winning four consecutive overall titles from 2022 and scoring 2,042 points in 2022-23 to break Hermann Maier's men's record, while combining Olympic giant slalom gold in Beijing with world downhill and giant slalom titles. Around them the sport is negotiating harder questions. Injuries have hit a scale that racers describe openly as unsustainable, pushing airbag vests, better air fences and course redesign to the top of the agenda. Warming winters have already cost the calendar races — the cross-border Zermatt-Cervinia downhills were abandoned after repeated cancellations — and forced near-total reliance on machine-made and water-injected snow. A dispute over centralised media rights has set FIS against its most powerful national federations. The racing has rarely been better; the ground it happens on has rarely looked less certain.

Alpine skiing's century has been a running negotiation between three forces: the mountain, which does not change; the equipment, which changes constantly and drags technique behind it; and the rulebook, which chases both and tries to keep racers alive. Every era's signature — Schneider's stem turn, Vuarnet's egg, Stenmark's stillness, Tomba's cross-block, Odermatt's arc — was a solution to the specific problem posed by that generation's skis and gates. What has not moved since Murren in 1922 is the settlement mechanism. One racer, one course, one clock, and a result nobody can argue with.
