PProtozoa and the human body

Protozoa ? Motile unicellular eukaryotes — a teaching grade that includes pond ciliates and a minority of serious parasites.

Global burden is uneven. Plasmodium falciparum still kills, especially children in endemic regions. That is a systems failure of nets, drugs and poverty — not a reason to fear pond water in every city equally.

Travel advice belongs with clinicians and public-health agencies. This page does not prescribe prophylaxis.

Body interfaces

Risk

Malaria parasites

Plasmodium species use Anopheles mosquitoes. Vaccines and nets are public tools; treatment is clinical.

Risk

Water-borne cysts

Giardia and Cryptosporidium (an apicomplexan neighbour in teaching) travel in water. Filters and boil notices are civic language.

Risk

Vector diseases

Trypanosomes and Leishmania map onto tsetse, sandflies and politics. Not a home culture.

Trade-off

Gut commensals

Some Entamoeba species are mostly harmless; E. histolytica is not. Names matter more than 'amoeba' as a scare word.

Ally

Classroom ecology

Watching Paramecium eat bacteria taught generations that ponds are cities.

Ally

Drug research

Antimalarials from quinine to artemisinin are history and ongoing resistance races — clinic-guided, not DIY.

Free-living ciliates in a classroom hay infusion are teachers, not a biohazard poster.
