Semiconductor engineering pays well almost everywhere demand is real, but the range is unusually wide even among the countries that dominate the industry: engineers in the United States and the Netherlands typically out-earn engineers in Taiwan and South Korea, even though the latter two countries manufacture most of the world's advanced chips.
Demand has also been famously cyclical rather than simply high. Memory-chip prices in particular swing through boom and bust cycles measured in years, and the industry endured a serious global chip shortage in 2021 followed, within a few years, by an oversupply in some segments even as AI-chip demand surged in others.

关键数字
谁在雇用他们
TSMC
The world's largest pure-play foundry, based in Hsinchu, Taiwan, and the primary manufacturer of the most advanced logic chips for Apple, Nvidia and most other fabless firms.
Samsung Electronics
A South Korean conglomerate that both designs and manufactures memory chips and, increasingly, logic chips through its own foundry business.
Intel
One of the last major US companies that both designs and manufactures its own chips, now also building out Intel Foundry to compete directly with TSMC.
ASML
A Dutch company that holds an effective monopoly on the extreme ultraviolet lithography machines advanced chipmaking depends on, and one of Europe's most valuable technology employers.
Nvidia
A US fabless company that designs graphics and AI accelerator chips, manufactured by TSMC, and became the industry's most valuable company during the AI chip boom.
Infineon Technologies
A German chipmaker, spun off from Siemens in 1999, focused heavily on automotive and industrial power semiconductors rather than cutting-edge logic.
需求去向何方
Demand has swung sharply rather than climbed steadily. A severe global chip shortage in 2020–2021, driven by pandemic-era demand shifts and factory shutdowns, gave way within a few years to oversupply in some memory-chip segments, even as demand for AI accelerator chips surged past what fabs could supply.
Long-run demand still looks strong: governments in the United States, European Union, Japan and South Korea are subsidizing new fab construction specifically to reduce dependence on Taiwan's concentrated manufacturing base, and the growth of AI training and inference is creating sustained demand for advanced logic and memory chips that shows no sign of slowing in the near term.
