The route is nearly identical in every title: climb the public ranked ladder into the top fraction of a percent — Challenger in League of Legends means roughly the top few hundred accounts on a server — get scouted into an academy or trainee roster, usually between fifteen and seventeen, then convert that into a tier-one contract. There is no application form; the ladder is the audition, and it runs around the clock.
The spread is enormous. Top-league minimums run from about ₩60 million in Korea's LCK to $75,000 in the North American LCS (2023); established starters earn low-to-mid six figures, and superstars earn millions — reported peaks passed $5 million a year during China's 2021 salary bubble. Below tier one most players earn very little, while Dota 2's prize skew let one captain, N0tail, retire with about $7.2 million in winnings.
Declining reflexes are the popular explanation and the weakest one. The real drivers are burnout from ten-to-fourteen-hour practice days, overuse injuries — China's biggest star, Jian "Uzi" Zihao, retired at 23 in 2020 citing chronic hand damage — annual roster churn, and the fact that streaming often pays a famous ex-pro better than playing did. Faker winning world titles at 27 and 28 shows the ceiling is moving.
No degree, license or diploma is required anywhere; leagues instead enforce age minimums — seventeen in Riot's tier-one leagues, eighteen in the former Overwatch League. Universities have built esports scholarships since Robert Morris University's first varsity program in 2014, and Staffordshire University launched a BA in esports in 2018, but those routes mostly lead to industry jobs — coaching, production, management — rather than playing careers.
It depends on the jurisdiction. The United States has issued P-1A internationally-recognized-athlete visas to pro gamers since 2013; China listed "esports player" as an official occupation in 2019; the Asian Games made esports a full medal event at Hangzhou in 2023; and the IOC has announced an Olympic Esports Games. Germany's Olympic Sports Confederation, by contrast, declined to recognize esports as sport in 2018.
A standard tier-one day contains two scrim blocks of three to five hours against other professional teams, plus individual ranked play and video review — ten to fourteen hours, commonly six days a week. Korean team houses pioneered the format in the 2000s and exported it worldwide; top organizations now temper it with gyms, physiotherapists and sleep coaches, because the schedule was visibly shortening careers.
No profession on this site has a steeper internal pay pyramid. League minimums in the top Korean and American leagues run in the tens of thousands of dollars; the reported peaks of China's 2021 salary bubble passed five million a year; and below tier one, thousands of semi-pros earn less than minimum wage for identical hours. Averages are meaningless here — the honest picture is the whole distribution.
The market also runs on two currencies at once: salary and prize money, weighted differently per game. Franchised League of Legends pays salaries and modest prizes; Dota 2 historically inverted this, with The International's crowd-funded pools making champions into instant millionaires; Counter-Strike and the mobile titles sit between. Add streaming income, and a famous player's playing salary can be the smallest of three revenue lines.
Typical academy and trainee deals in Western and Korean feeder leagues, early 2020s; some pay little beyond housing.
LCK minimum ₩60M (~$45k) and LCS minimum $75k, 2023 season rules — the floor for a tier-one starter.
Reported average LCS player pay exceeded $300k at the 2021 peak; figures contracted across regions after 2022.
Star mid laners and AWPers in LCK, LPL and top CS rosters; seven-figure League salaries were reported from 2017 onward.
Reported peaks of China's 2020–21 LPL bubble; excludes streaming, endorsement and prize income, which can exceed salary.

Reported LPL starter-to-star range at the 2020–21 salary bubble's peak; contracted sharply since, but still the historical ceiling.
LCS minimum $75k (2023) with star deals into seven figures; the Fortnite and Call of Duty prize circuits add top-heavy winnings.
LCK minimum ₩60M with stars on multi-billion-won packages; Faker's T1 renewals famously included part ownership of the club.
Berlin hosts the LEC and much of Europe's infrastructure; salaries at equivalent level run visibly below NA and China.
A smaller playing market where the 2022 VALORANT boom around clubs like ZETA DIVISION lifted salaries; sponsorship income is unusually strong.
Passionate CS and LoL scenes around FURIA and LOUD — VALORANT world champions in 2022 — but pay far below northern-hemisphere leagues.
Seoul-based joint venture of SK Telecom and Comcast Spectacor; Faker's lifelong club and the most decorated organization in League of Legends.
Seoul and Los Angeles organization bridging the Korean and American markets, with LCK championships and backers including celebrity investors.
Berlin powerhouse founded by ex-pro Carlos "ocelote" Rodríguez; Europe's dominant League of Legends brand with major CS and VALORANT rosters.
Founded in the Netherlands in 2000 as a StarCraft community site; now a Utrecht-and-Los-Angeles multi-title giant co-owned by aXiomatic, whose investors include Magic Johnson.
London organization founded in 2004; won the first League of Legends world title in 2011 and remains a flagship European employer across CS, LoL and VALORANT.
Kyiv's Na'Vi, first organization to win The International (2011) and a defining Counter-Strike dynasty around Oleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev.
The core arithmetic is brutal: hundreds of millions play the qualifying games, while tier-one starting jobs per title number in the low hundreds worldwide — ten to twelve teams of five per major league. The odds of converting a ranked ladder into a salary are meaningfully worse than a youth footballer's odds of a professional contract.
The 2022–24 "esports winter" thinned the middle: venture-backed organizations cut rosters, the Overwatch League dissolved after 2023, and salaries retreated from the 2021 bubble. The offset came from states and publishers — Saudi Arabia's $1.5 billion ESL-FACEIT purchase and the $60 million Esports World Cup, plus Riot's and Valve's stable circuits — leaving a smaller but more solvent employment base.
Growth is happening where the phones are. PUBG Mobile, Mobile Legends and Free Fire circuits in Southeast Asia, South Asia and Brazil now draw domestic audiences rivaling anything on PC, and the Asian Games medal event pulled these scenes into national sports systems. The next generation of pros is likelier to come from Jakarta, Mumbai or São Paulo than from Los Angeles.
