Pay in this profession is unusually stage-dependent even by academic standards: a PhD student is paid a stipend well below minimum-wage-equivalent in some countries, while a senior industry scientist or biotech executive in the same field can earn many multiples more, often within the same city.
It is also sharply divided by sector as much as by country: university and government research salaries tend to lag well behind private pharmaceutical and biotech industry pay for comparable seniority almost everywhere, which is part of why so many biology PhDs eventually move from academia into industry.

需求去向何方
Demand for biology PhDs vastly outstrips the number of permanent academic research positions available: most countries' university systems train far more doctoral biologists each year than they can ever employ as professors, a structural mismatch commonly called the "postdoc bottleneck."
Industry demand tells a different story: the global biotechnology and pharmaceutical sector has grown rapidly, and genomics, synthetic biology and gene-editing companies in particular have expanded hiring well beyond what academic labs alone ever needed, absorbing a growing share of biology PhDs who leave the traditional academic track.
Demand is least secure at the postdoctoral and early-career stage, where short contracts and fierce grant competition are the norm nearly everywhere, and most secure at the senior, grant-winning end of the profession, where deep expertise takes over a decade to replace.
