On 14–15 April 1912 the White Star liner RMS Titanic struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank, killing about 1,500 people and forcing the first SOLAS convention. RMS Titanic, an Olympic-class liner of the White Star Line, left Southampton on 10 April 1912 for New York via Cherbourg and Queenstown. Shortly before midnight on 14 April the ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. It sank at about 02:20 on 15 April. The British Wreck Commissioner’s report of 30 July 1912 recorded the loss of 1,490 lives at 41°46′N, 50°14′W.
Two public inquiries sat within weeks. A United States Senate subcommittee chaired by Senator William Alden Smith heard witnesses from 19 April. In London, Lord Mersey’s court sat from 2 May to 30 July 1912, examined 97 witnesses and answered 26 Board of Trade questions. Both found that high speed in an ice field, thin lookout practice and too few lifeboats turned a collision into a mass-casualty wreck.
The disaster is closed as a cause-of-loss case. The wreck was located on 1 September 1985 by a Franco-American team led by Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel. What remains open is heritage law: who may visit, film or lift objects from a gravesite that now sits under UNESCO and United States protective statutes.

Myth vs. Evidence Fact-Check
How do I read a Theranos claim against this dossier timeline?
Aftermath claims already on file sit beside beats already published here: 2003 founding, 2013 Walgreens rollout, 2014 peak private valuation, 15 October 2015 Journal investigation, 2016 CMS sanctions, 2018 SEC charges and wind-down, 2021 Holmes trial in San Jose. The pairing is a reading aid, not a new court finding.
Was Holmes convicted of harming patients?
The January 2022 Northern District of California verdict convicted her on investor-related wire-fraud counts and acquitted her on patient-related counts. Balwani was convicted on patient-related counts in July 2022. Marking a beat supported or contested on this page does not change that public record and is not this encyclopedia verdict.
Did the Journal invent the laboratory problems?
No. Carreyrou 15 October 2015 Wall Street Journal series is the public break. CMS later sanctioned the Newark lab (2016), and two juries independently found serious false statements. The claim that the Journal invented it is already listed to weigh against those years, not as this page conclusion.
What do supported, contested, and unknown mean on the beat-weight table?
They are editorial marks you set on this device against claims already in the aftermath chapter (patient-harm, Journal invention, no tests ever ran, 9 billion public company). Default is unknown. They teach how a public-record file can be read; they are not a legal verdict, not a how-to, and not a private case file.
