How

Whitewater, pop-up, then the lineup’s rules.

The method is a fat board in broken whitewater, a pop-up that happens every time, then a move to unbroken peaks only when paddling and rip literacy exist.

A famous reef break is a later exam, not a first classroom.

Steps

  1. Start on a soft-top in whitewater

A school beach with a lifeguard flag.

Hardboards come after the motion is boring.

  2. Learn the rip and the flag

Sideways, not against, a rip. Ask the tower.

A pretty peak behind a red flag is still a red flag.

  3. Pop up to a stance

Hands under the chest, eyes forward. Repeat until it is ugly and reliable.

Film from the beach once, not every wave.

  4. Paddle with a purpose

Into the line of the whitewater, then angle. Fitness is the hidden skill.

A lost board on a leash still hits people — look.

  5. Enter a beginner lineup

Sit wide, wait, do not drop in. The rules are the culture.

One wave, then paddle back with a plan.

  6. Only then try a steeper peak

    Reef and point breaks wait.

A local who offers a quieter peak is a gift.
