Lights got cheaper and brighter. Animals did not get more patient. The present is a code-writing exercise.
The outlook is fewer, better-run night products.
Trends
- Brighter LEDs — More seeing, more blinding.
- Manta and turtle night codes — Spreading from Hawaii and the Maldives.
- Park curfews — Some reefs now close at dusk.
- Night snorkel bioluminescence tours — A parallel, sometimes sloppy, product.
- Video lights as primaries — A bad substitution when they cannot signal.
Conservation
- Strobe stress — A documented animal-welfare fight.
- Trampling at night — Worse because people cannot see the coral they kneel on.
- Boat noise and lights — Harbour animals.
- Battery waste — A small, real trash stream.
Access
- Who gets the manta circle — Locals vs packages.
- Inland quarries — The only night access for many climates.
- Disability — A few operators can do a night sit-dive; most cannot.
- Language of light signals — A safety access issue.
Outlook
- Codes or closures — Parks will pick one.
- House-reef nights as the mass — Honest.
- Do not merge with wreck on a whim — The atlas scores them apart for a reason.
Night diving’s future is a written animal code and a second torch. The dark is not a growth market without those.
