Major honours
Austria has produced world champions unusually often relative to its size. A founding ITTF member from 1926, it won the Swaythling Cup in Prague in 1936, and Richard Bergmann took the men's singles title in 1937 with Trude Pritzi winning the women's singles in 1938. After a long postwar gap, Werner Schlager's men's singles title in Paris in 2003 ranks among the biggest upsets in the sport's modern history. He beat defending champions Wang Liqin and Kong Linghui back to back during the tournament and defeated South Korea's Joo Se-hyuk in the final. Through the Paris 2024 Olympics, his win remains the last time a non-Asian player won World Championship men's singles. Austria has also actively naturalized Chinese-born players, and defensive stylists such as Chen Weixing sustained a long presence on the European circuit.

In the 1930s Austria formed a Central European triangle with Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and Schlager's 2003 title remains a failure China has not repeated in more than twenty years since.
