Sweden is the only country to have genuinely toppled a Chinese dynasty. The run began when Stellan Bengtsson won the world singles title in Nagoya in 1971 and peaked with the golden generation of Jan-Ove Waldner, Jorgen Persson, Mikael Appelgren and Erik Lindh in the 1980s. Sweden shut China out 5-0 in the 1989 Swaythling Cup final in Dortmund, won three in a row through Chiba 1991 and Gothenburg 1993, and added one more in Kuala Lumpur in 2000 for five titles overall. Waldner completed a career Grand Slam with Olympic singles gold in Barcelona in 1992, and he remains the only player outside China to have done so. Behind a country of ten million people lay a dense club culture in which young players trained alongside adults in the same senior leagues. At Paris 2024, Truls Moregardh won men's singles silver and the men's team took silver as well, reviving a long-dormant lineage.
