The Chinese national team is the most complete dynasty in sports history. China joined the ITTF in 1953 and made its international debut that year at the Bucharest World Championships; just six years later, in 1959, Rong Guotuan became China's first world champion, and table tennis instantly became a matter of state. A selection pyramid running from school and provincial sports schools up through the first and second national squads made China's own trials harder to survive than any international tournament, and the Zhengding training base assigns dedicated sparring partners who mimic an upcoming opponent's serve and style down to the detail. Of the 42 Olympic golds contested from Seoul 1988 through Paris 2024, 37 went to China, and every one of the ten men's and women's team golds contested since the 2008 introduction of the team event has gone to China as well. Its combined men's and women's World Championship singles titles stand at 49, and its combined Swaythling and Corbillon Cup titles at 46. Ten of the eleven players to complete a career Grand Slam are Chinese.

Sweden in the late 1980s, South Korea in the 2000s and Japan in the 2020s each took a turn as the main challenger, but none held the position for long. The one opponent this program has never fully shaken off is its own domestic trials.
